"My love of Scottish history has been influenced by various visual interpretations of my nation's story through paintings, films and TV. So it’s no surprise that the iconic Eilean Donan Castle has always fascinated me. The castle's unique location on the junction of three sea lochs close to the Isle of Skye allows it to be illuminated by misty dawns, Atlantic sunsets and brooding mountain storms. The light from the sky and from the surrounding water constantly change the texture and mood of its fortified walls and main keep. Truly everyone’s idea of a noble Highland stronghold! Every year my father would take us to Glen Lyon. This is where he spent the happiest time of his life, living with his grandmother in a small whitewashed cottage with green wooden shutters that had heart shaped holes cut out in them. Before travelling into the glen, we stopped at Aberfeldy, a picturesque town where the poet Robert Burns wrote his song “The Birks Of Aberfeldy” and where Dewar’s whiskey is distilled. On the edge of town, next to the river, is the putting green where we would always stop for a wee game. If I managed to get a hole in one, I would get an extra scoop of ice cream on my cone. "When I was creating work for my Youth and Young Manhood portfolio, I drew inspiration from old photographs of my Grandad a a young man. Over The Sea is a signed limited edition print of the painting of the same name by Alexander Millar. "A while back I had the privilege of meeting the great Jesse Rae. I remember a good few years ago sitting to watch one of my favourite programmes at the time called "The Tube" which was filmed in the Tyne Tees studios in Newcastle and my ears soon pricked up when I heard the fabulous song "Over The Sea" and the video at the time was sheer brilliance Even now it's been voted as one of the best videos ever made. To every Scotsman it was like hearing the pipes after a while away and the hairs immediately stood up on the back of my neck. Well fast-forward twenty odd years and here I am standing talking to that very man; him holding the sword that flew across the sea from the States back home to Scotland. I said at the time "wow Jesse, this is like music history that I'm holding in my hands" and without dropping a beat he said with a wry smile " so am I" .. And he's right. If you can get a chance to listen to some of his back catalogue of music, you won't be disappointed. If there was ever a musician waiting to be lifted back on to the world music scene when so much of the industry is characterless and dying on its feet, well it's this man. "I was heartbroken when I heard that the man who provided the soundtrack to my life had died. David Bowie was a musical genius and a truly interesting man who lived several lives during his time on the planet. The Thin White Duke was one of Bowie's personas I’m often asked how I find new ideas to paint, the truth is that ideas are always there.
